Question 1

Is OpenJornada really open source?

Accepted Answer

Yes. OpenJornada is distributed under the AGPL-3.0 license and its code is published at github.com/openjornada.

Question 2

Can I install OpenJornada myself?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The self-hosted version is free (€0); it deploys with Docker or Kubernetes and comes with installation documentation. You download the code, install it on your infrastructure, and customize it freely.

Question 3

What if I don't have the time or technical skills? Can you do it for me?

Accepted Answer

Yes, there are two options: a one-time installation for a €500 flat fee on your own infrastructure, or the OpenJornada Cloud plan for €990/year, fully managed (hosting, backups, SSL and updates included).

Question 4

What does the €990/year plan (OpenJornada Cloud) include?

Accepted Answer

A dedicated, isolated instance; up to 200 employees (200+: custom pricing); unlimited record storage; CSV/Excel/PDF export; monthly reports per employee and company; digital signature of monthly records; Labor Inspectorate access; configurable breaks; schedule change requests; multi-administrator; email support; daily backups; SSL; automatic updates; and SMS reminders for missed clock-outs. Includes a 60-day guarantee, instant activation and annual billing + VAT.

Question 5

What's the difference between Self-Hosted and Cloud?

Accepted Answer

Self-hosted is free, runs on your own server, and you manage it. Cloud costs €990/year, is fully managed by us, and requires no technical team.

Question 6

Is it an open source alternative to Kimai?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it's the only one with native Spanish legal compliance: Kimai needs additional plugins to cover legal export and digital signatures.

Question 7

Does it comply with the 2026 time tracking law / RD-Ley 8/2019?

Accepted Answer

Yes: records are tamper-proof, with change traceability, digital signatures, 4-year retention, and access enabled for the Labor Inspectorate.

Question 8

Where is the data stored?

Accepted Answer

On your own server if you choose self-hosted, or on a dedicated, isolated instance if you choose Cloud. Data is never shared with third parties, and processing complies with GDPR.

Question 9

How many employees does it support?

Accepted Answer

On Cloud, up to 200 employees (beyond that, custom pricing). On self-hosted, there's no technical limit.

Question 10

Do I need technical knowledge?

Accepted Answer

For self-hosted, yes (or you can hire the €500 installation service). For Cloud, no: it's a turnkey solution.

Question 11

Does it include reminders for workers?

Accepted Answer

Yes, automatic SMS reminders when a worker forgets to clock out.

Question 12

Is OpenJornada available in multiple languages?

Accepted Answer

Yes. OpenJornada is available in 3 languages: Catalan, Spanish, and English. The interface, emails, and SMS notifications are all sent in the language selected by each user.

Question 13

Can I migrate from another tool?

Accepted Answer

Yes, via CSV import or the REST API. Migration services are also available.

Question 14

Is there a minimum contract length?

Accepted Answer

Billing is annual, with a 60-day guarantee and no forced commitment beyond the contracted period.

Question 15

How does absence and vacation management work?

Accepted Answer

An employee requests an absence from their portal (type, dates, comment, and optional attachment). The system validates overlaps, blackout periods, and balance. The admin approves or rejects with full audit trail. Balance updates in real time.

Question 16

Can I customize the absence types for my company?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Each company has a configurable catalogue with code, name, whether it deducts balance, whether it requires an attachment, and calendar color. Default types: Vacation, Personal leave, Paid leave, Justified absence, and Unjustified absence.

Question 17

How is the vacation balance calculated?

Accepted Answer

The balance is computed on the fly based on the company policy (annual days, computation mode by calendar or business days) and the employee's approved and pending absences. It is not stored — it always reflects the current state.

Question 18

Can employees attach supporting documents to their requests?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Each absence request allows attaching a justification in PDF or image format (JPEG/PNG, max. 5 MB). Attachments are stored in the company's database and can be downloaded from the admin panel.

Question 19

Is there a free time-tracking app?

Accepted Answer

Yes. OpenJornada is free in self-hosted mode (€0, AGPL-3.0 code): you can install it on your own server with no license cost. If you'd rather not manage the infrastructure, there's also the OpenJornada Cloud plan for €990/year.

Question 20

Does OpenJornada manage vacation days?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The absence and vacation module calculates each employee's balance on the fly, lets you configure custom absence types, and is reflected in the monthly report alongside the rest of the time records.
